ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL In 1975-76 the examination of the problems of solid waste and the search for possible solutions became a major environmental activity with N.I.R.C.C. In 1973, the Solid Waste Disposal Program was developed for Allen County. This past year work was begun on a regional solid waste plan which will exaMine the question of future solid waste disposal on a county by county basis, involving all four counties. The adoption of this plan is scheduled co be completed in mid-summer, 1976. During the past year work was completed on the Fort \.Jayne Urban Sec tor Haumee River Baslin Level B Study ',..'hich was done for the Great Lakes Basin Commission. The purpose of the Level B Study was to examine land use, flood protec cion, wastewater management, water quality, and soil erosion along the t>1aumee River. The Council continued its program of assistance to local communities in their pursuit of federal assis-tance to aid them in solving problcRs of water supply and wastewater treatment. Seven communities applied for Step I grants which provide funding for preliminary study of wastewater problems and alternative solutions. These include Hudson, Geneva, Decatur, Honroe, St. Joe, Markle, and the Maysville Sewer District. Funds for actual construe tion have been applied for the North Maumee System and several interceptors in the City of Fort Wayne. Honroeville has applied for funding for improvements to their potable water system. - 12 -
