What Other Towns Are Doing The following information is meant to show what source separation recycling projects are presently being underta~en. This section is a list of the programs that are now underway in the State of Indiana. We have contacted persons involved with each of these programs and all appreciate the problems involved with starting up projects and have st'ated their willingness to help other communities that have questions concerning such projects. 1. City of Wabash The City has organized a recycling program that has been in operation for about six years. The project includes house-to-house collection, transfer stations, and a central collection center. Materials collected include glass, metal, and paper. The project allows for volunteer participation by any resident of the surrounding area, however, house-to-house collection is limited to the City. The central collection center and the transfer stations are used for those people that do not want to be included in the house-to-house pickup but want to recycle their wastes. The collection center is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will accept materials during this period, while the transfer stations area accessible 24 hours ~ day. The house-to-house collection system required that each participant separate the recyclable materials into three categories: glass, metal, and paper. The part-icipants were required to have three specially colored garbage cans, one for each of the following types of materials: clear glass, colored glass, and metal. Paper is supposed to be either bundled, boxed, or bagged. At the proper collection date these materials are supposed to be set at the curb in front of each home and are picked up by special crews. This program does not collect all household wastes. All wastes that are not accepted by the recycling operation are picked up by the regular municiple collection service. -23-
