Flood Protection Efforts Benefit Community The history of Fort Wayne has been marked by periodic flooding. In 1991, various efforts were made by Community & Economic Development staff to protect homes and businesses from the damaging effects of flooding. The 1991 Flood Report, produced by the Long Range Planning Section, highlighted a new 24-month work program as well as an updated flood protection plan. Of the various goals presented in the plan, two were new in 1991: participation in the Community Rating System (CRS) program, and the acquisition of flood prone properties. Long Range planners coordinated the CRS program. The program has reduced flood insurance premiums for Fort Wayne policyholders by five percent; continued flood prevention efforts may allow further reductions in the future. Thanks to Community & Economic Development's acquisition program, several Fort Wayne property owners will no longer have to routinely battle encroaching flood waters. The program was coordinated by the Long Range Planning staff who selected flood-damaged and flood-prone properties, and the Redevelopment staff who used Community Development Block Grant funds to acquire the properties and relocated the former residents. Neighborhood Code Enforcement assisted with inspections to ensure that the new homes of residents were safe. These efforts will reduce future flood damage and reduce costs for both taxpayers and owners of property in the floodplain. Community & Economic Development will continue the programs to help ameliorate flooding in the city of three rivers.
