During the 1999 mayoral election canlpaign the business eOlnlnunity listened with anticipation as both candidates for Mayor addressed this issue of cutting urcd tape'~. After Mayor Richard was elected and an alliance was f01med by you, Satn Talarico, Jr., and Glynn Hines, again the business cOlunlunity was encouraged. During public input meetings, it becanle c]ear that the landscape ordinance would he n10st logical and casiest way to begin cutting this excessive govcnunent regulation . It would appear that, presently, the initial efforts of this alliance in cutting excessive regulations frolll the landscape ordinance is lneeting with opposition. This, T helieve has serious ranlificati()ns for business and calls into question just how serious government is about cutting red tape. Tn its attempt to lure now businesses or the expansion of present businesses in the City of Fort Wayne and Allen County area, it appears that some govenullent officials just. do not understand the far reaching impact of local govenunont regulation. It is my belief that unless elected officials make changes to exjsting burdens, it does very little for the puhlic entities to aggressively market our community to the outside business world. You can ~llend all the money in the world on marketing the City of Fort Wayne/Al1en County, but unless local govcrruncnt officials make a concerted effort to make our "intell1ul" regulations competitive with area counties and states, b~inesscs will locate or expand elsewhere. Anlending the landscape ordinance is only the tip of the iceberg. 4429 Allen Martin Drive • Fort Wayne, I~dlana 46806 • Phone: (219) 447-5670 • Fax: (219) 447-4018
