- ,. ~/Li process requires that the aeration tanks be enclosed and gas-tight to avoid loss of high purity oxygen to the atl~osphcre. For treatment plants of the 60 NGD magnitude, it is necessary to provide on-site oxygen production equipment. While the process has been extensively tested in pilot plant and full scale applications, it has not been operated on a long-term, continuous basis. The process appears to be theoretically sound but has not yet been conclusively proven for general application. The UNOX sys tern was cvalua ted on t\.,o differing approaches. The t\"O approaches are (1) conversion of two exis ting tanks, and (2) installation of 30 MCD UNOX aeration tanks in addition to the existing 30 flCD conventional aeration tanks. Construction cost ,....... .,,.f. I..' .\.' V"~",+-.f",,.,. ... " ... 1, ... ~C" ~ - , ............. -.. v ,--- ............... - .- - struction cost estimate for the separate system is $2,220,000. Estimated construction cost for secondary clarifiers is $1,430,000. This cost is not included in the construction cost estimates for ei ther the expanded conventional aeration sys tem or the ill-lOX expan-sion system. .Estimated operation and maintenance £osts for the expanded secondary treatment system are given in Table 11I/3. Even though it appears a substantial savings in capital cost ana operational cost can be realized by installation of the UNOX system, the Engineer recommends that a pilot plant study be conducted at the Water Pollution Control Plant in order to detennine the treatability of was~cwaters for the Fort Wayne area.
