20 / FORT WAYNE PARKS AND RECREATION ... and tours at reasonable rates for more than 25 years and 1999 was a very rewarding one for the Travel Program. Extended tours (two or more days) were enjoyed by 89 more travelers than in 1998, while 104 more people traveled on one-day tours. The Travel Program served a total of 1,343 travelers in 1999. Gross trip revenues exceeded $165,600 - a record high and an increase of more than $56,000 over 1998. This strong travel trend is expected to continue in the foreseeable future and may be attributable to several factors: more people reaching retirement age, a healthy economy, better transportation and accommodations, increased tourism promotion, and increased opportunities. Although other travel providers have come and gone in our market area, our program has remained strong partially due to our focus on good value, personalized service, attention to detail and openness to the pUblic. lt is my belief that increasing numbers and revenue reflect five years of hard work and quality service in a very demanding and competitive market by our very dedicated Travel Coordinator, Debbie Reinking. She personally accompanies many of our trips and carefully selects and trains escorts for others. Deb is constantly seeking new and The publisher of the NewsSentinel, Miss Helene Foellinger, announced during the year that the News-Sentinel would donate to the City jimds for the construction of an outdoor theater for drama and musical entertainment. Annual Report of the Board of Park Commissioners, 1947 improved areas of service and marketing to a growing segment of our population who are looking to fill their leisure time with quality group travel experiences. The Travel Program continually brings new "customers" in touch with the Department and provides gross profits which may be used to support other services. Foellinger Theater Installation of a new sound system and an updated lighting system at Foellinger Theater (provided through a grant from the Foellinger Foundation) was completed along with several other amenities in 1999. The facility now features state of the art technology providing enhanced enjoyment of the attractions there. With financial and promotional assistance from the Fort Wayne Park Foundation, local media, and several local sponsors, the Department again provided a quality schedule of free concerts and entertainment events at the Theater in 1999. The popular summer series featured pop, jazz, big band, classical, countrywestern, ethnic, raggae and other styles of music. Attendance at the Theater reached a record of almost 64,000 people.
