RECOMMENDATIONS Many of the past recommendations of the 1960, 1961 annual reports have been consummated. However: listed below are a few major and minor recommendations which will aid in the upgrading of the Fort Wayne Fire Department. 1. Continue the fire apparatus replacement program adopted in 1960. 2. Provide one additional aerial ladder so that at least one aerial ladder will be available in each quadrant of the city. 3. .Reloca te No. 6 Fire Station in a northwesterly direction ~ thus giving gr-eat-er protection to this rapidly growing area. 4. In order to attract gr.eater numbers of applicants for employment on the Fire Department, and for the benefit of those now employed, I recommend the reduction of working hours of firemen from the present sixty three (63) hours per week to fifty six (56) hours per week. 5. Because of greater demand being placed upon all apparatus through expansion of the city and an increased number of vehicles, the present maintenance shop has outgrown i:ts 'present faciiities. Therefore, I recommend new faci.lit-ies for the Fire Department Shop. 6. Improve training facilities by the construction of a masonry drill tower and a pumper test pit. 7. Self-contained breathing apparatus should be sufficient in number so that two (2) are availabl.e for each piliece of apparatus~ 8. Additional trunk lines to the Fire Alarm Headquarters should be provided. 9. Additional fire hydrants should be added in the principal business and residential districts. 10. Additional personnel and transportation should be provided for the Fire Prevention Bureau. 11. Add sufficient personnel to the Department so that five (5) men will be on duty with each pumper and ladder company responding in the principal business district, and four (4) men per company responding in other areas.
