These notes are academic in nature and speak to you from the point of view of some of the many collaborators it takes to create our productions. This time you will be hearing from Craig A. Humphrey, director. In gathering my thoughts for these production notes, I decided to take a look back at what I had written when I directed Into the Woods here in 1998. What follows is a condensed version of those notes. "Fairy tales are one of the staples of our lives. We learn them as children. We in turn teach them to our children. We see them on television, at the movies, on stage, and in commercials and print ads. But with Into the Woods we see them in anew way. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine have giveh us a fresh perspective from which to investigate these old favorites. As their source, they have gone back to the original tales as collected by the Brothers Grimm. Many of us would be surprised to encounter the original stories, as they include graphically violent acts of revenge and retribution. In allowing Into the Woods to be dark when it needs to be, the authors have created a piece of musical theatre that entertains while posing important questions. Into the Woods stresses the importance of wishes. It asks us to be certain of what we want, and to remember that nothing comes without sacrifice. It also reminds us that "no one is alone;" that our actions are far reaching. Here is a musical that asks us to consider the impact our actions and words have on one another - particularly those between parents and children. We are reminded that even the most innocent and loving advice can have negative repercussions." In re-examining those lines of text I discovered that my thoughts and observations on the show today are in many ways the same ones I had 16 years ago. If anything, my fascination with the themes presented in this musical and my respect for the amazingly tight construction that allows those ideas to emerge have only intensified over the years. As our world has become an increasingly smaller place, where seemingly isolated and insignificant actions can result in global ramifications beyond our imagining, the aspects of Into the Woods that investigate the relationships between parents and children and the notion of community responsibility seem all the more relevant today. I believe this is beautifully reflected in the following lyric written by Stephen Sondheim for the song "Children Will Listen," but cut from the show before its Broadway opening in 1987: What do you leave to your child when you're dead? Only whatever you put in its head. Things that your father and mother had said, Which were left to them too . . . . Careful the things you say, Children will listen. 10 DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE Craig A. The result is a timeless musical fable of love that manages to be nostalgic and universal at the same time. With whimsy and poignancy, it reveals the folly and fragility of human nature. It allows us to recognize a bit of ourselves and to smile at what we once were, and perhaps what we may always be. Amanda Wingfield is a faded Southern belle, living with her two grown children in a small apartment in St. Louis. Amanda dreams of a better life for her painfully shy daughter, Laura, and so she pushes her son, Tom to find a "gentleman caller" for his sister. Tom, dreaming of an escape from his oppressive life, agrees, and the arrival of the gentleman caller sends shockwaves through the family, shattering the delicate fantasies that have kept them going. IPFVV is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access University. 14 The Imaginary Invalid is merry-go-round of misplaced desires and hidden agendas. To quell his growing pile of medical bills, Monsieur Argan, a chronic hypochondriac, will go to any length to marry his daughter off to a doctor. Of course, his daughter has other ideas. A narcotic cocktail of romantic triangles, double entendres and mistaken identities ensues, promising to leave you gasping, giggling, and possibly ... in stitches. In a faded dime store in the tiny, dried up West Texas town of McCarthy, the "Disciples of James Dean" gather for their 20th anniversary reunion. Now in their 30s, they were teenagers when Dean filmed Giant in nearby Marfa. Through a mixture of humor and pathos the play's characters discover who they were then, what they've lost, and who they are now. Contains adult language and subject matter. Merrily We Roll Along takes us on a journey backwards in time, tracing the lives of three close friends through the best and worst milestones of their personal and professional lives. With the wit, humor, and the intensity that embody the spirit of New York City and a brilliant "Broadway-style" score, Merrily We Roll Along is a spirited and moving musical about friendship, compromise, and the high price of success. 15 IPFW DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC Upcoming Concerts Community Orchestra Concert featuring IPFW Opera Ensemble The first half of the concert will feature IPFW Concerto/Aria competition winners. I IPFW INDIANA UNIVERSITY-PURDUE UNIVERSITY FORT WAYNE '~ 17 The Department of Theatre seeks your assistance in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Campaign for the Arts. Our mission is four-fold: to offer the academic degree programs most in demand by area citizens; to provide the northeast Indiana region with exceptionally high-quality theatrical performances by students, faculty, and community members; to offer to the community various theatrical services, such as student matinees and theatre training through the IPFW Community Arts Academy; and to provide a continuum of outreach activities to the greater northeast Indiana community. Our vision is to be widely recognized as the major theatre resource center for the greater Fort Wayne and northeast Indiana communities. To meet this challenge, we need your help! IPFW is a state-assisted-not state-supported-university. Furthermore, we are allocated only about one-half of the state dollars that the main campuses receive per student. This, in turn, directly impacts the theatre department with severe budgetary constraints. Your dollars are essential to help us move forward with our commitments to northeast Indiana. Should you be interested in helping to financially support us in our mission, please contact John O'Connell, dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, at 260-481-6977. Your contribution will enable us in our mission to keep our academic programs current, continue diversity in theatre programming, and maintain our commitment to northeast Indiana through our service and outreach activities. DIRECTOR NOTES
In keeping with the academic mission of the IPFW Department of Theatre, we are pleased to
feature Production Notes in our program. These notes are academic in nature and speak to you
from the point of view of some of the many collaborators it takes to create our productions. This
time you will be hearing from Craig A. Humphrey, director.
In gathering my thoughts for these production notes, I decided to take a look back at what I had
written when I directed Into the Woods here in 1998. What follows is a condensed version of
those notes.
"Fairy tales are one of the staples of our lives. We learn them as children. We in
turn teach them to our children. We see them on television, at the movies, on
stage, and in commercials and print ads. But with Into the Woods we see them
in anew way.
Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine have giveh us a fresh perspective from
which to investigate these old favorites. As their source, they have gone back
to the original tales as collected by the Brothers Grimm. Many of us would be
surprised to encounter the original stories, as they include graphically violent
acts of revenge and retribution. In allowing Into the Woods to be dark when it
needs to be, the authors have created a piece of musical theatre that entertains
while posing important questions. Into the Woods stresses the importance of
wishes. It asks us to be certain of what we want, and to remember that nothing
comes without sacrifice. It also reminds us that "no one is alone;" that our
actions are far reaching. Here is a musical that asks us to consider the impact our
actions and words have on one another - particularly those between parents and
children. We are reminded that even the most innocent and loving advice can
have negative repercussions."
In re-examining those lines of text I discovered that my thoughts and observations on the show
today are in many ways the same ones I had 16 years ago. If anything, my fascination with
the themes presented in this musical and my respect for the amazingly tight construction that
allows those ideas to emerge have only intensified over the years.
As our world has become an increasingly smaller place, where seemingly isolated and
insignificant actions can result in global ramifications beyond our imagining, the aspects of
Into the Woods that investigate the relationships between parents and children and the notion of
community responsibility seem all the more relevant today. I believe this is beautifully reflected
in the following lyric written by Stephen Sondheim for the song "Children Will Listen," but cut
from the show before its Broadway opening in 1987:
What do you leave to your child when you're dead?
Only whatever you put in its head.
Things that your father and mother had said,
Which were left to them too .
. . . Careful the things you say,
Children will listen.

2014-15 SEASON
The Fantasticks is a musical of purity and simplicity that
transcends cultural barriers. The result is a timeless musical
fable of love that manages to be nostalgic and universal at the same time. With whimsy and
poignancy, it reveals the folly and fragility of human nature. It allows us to recognize a bit of
ourselves and to smile at what we once were, and perhaps what we may always be.
Amanda Wingfield is a faded Southern belle, living with
her two grown children in a small apartment in St. Louis.
Amanda dreams of a better life for her painfully shy daughter, Laura, and so she pushes her
son, Tom to find a "gentleman caller" for his sister. Tom, dreaming of an escape from his
oppressive life, agrees, and the arrival of the gentleman caller sends shockwaves through the
family, shattering the delicate fantasies that have kept them going.
IPFVV is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access University.

The Imaginary Invalid is merry-go-round of misplaced desires
and hidden agendas. To quell his growing pile of medical
bills, Monsieur Argan, a chronic hypochondriac, will go to any
length to marry his daughter off to a doctor. Of course, his
daughter has other ideas. A narcotic cocktail of romantic triangles, double entendres
and mistaken identities ensues, promising to leave you gasping, giggling, and possibly ...
in stitches.
In a faded dime store in the tiny, dried up West Texas
town of McCarthy, the "Disciples of James Dean" gather
for their 20th anniversary reunion. Now in their 30s, they were teenagers when Dean filmed
Giant in nearby Marfa. Through a mixture of humor and pathos the play's characters discover
who they were then, what they've lost, and who they are now. Contains adult language and
subject matter.
Merrily We Roll Along takes us on a journey backwards in
time, tracing the lives of three close friends through the
best and worst milestones of their personal and professional lives. With the wit, humor, and
the intensity that embody the spirit of New York City and a brilliant "Broadway-style" score,
Merrily We Roll Along is a spirited and moving musical about friendship, compromise, and
the high price of success.

The Department of Theatre seeks your assistance in the College of Visual
and Performing Arts, Campaign for the Arts. Our mission is four-fold:
to offer the academic degree programs most in demand by area citizens;
to provide the northeast Indiana region with exceptionally high-quality
theatrical performances by students, faculty, and community members; to
offer to the community various theatrical services, such as student matinees
and theatre training through the IPFW Community Arts Academy; and to
provide a continuum of outreach activities to the greater northeast Indiana
community.
Our vision is to be widely recognized as the major theatre resource center
for the greater Fort Wayne and northeast Indiana communities. To meet this
challenge, we need your help!
IPFW is a state-assisted-not state-supported-university. Furthermore, we
are allocated only about one-half of the state dollars that the main campuses
receive per student. This, in turn, directly impacts the theatre department
with severe budgetary constraints. Your dollars are essential to help us move
forward with our commitments to northeast Indiana.
Should you be interested in helping to financially support us in our mission,
please contact John O'Connell, dean of the College of Visual and Performing
Arts, at 260-481-6977. Your contribution will enable us in our mission
to keep our academic programs current, continue diversity in theatre
programming, and maintain our commitment to northeast Indiana through
our service and outreach activities.
Please become a member of our Campaign for the Arts by choosing one of
the giving categories described on the next page. And remember, your gift is
tax deductible.
