Fun Summer Outdoor Activities
Here are some ideas for a fun and active summer. Try encouraging friends and family to participate with you.
1.
Enjoy Fort Wayne Parks -Explore different parks around the city each week.
2.
Gardening can be a relaxing and enjoyable stress reliever. Plus, it helps you get your 5 fruits and vegetables a day. If you don't have room for a garden. There are plenty of plants that can grow in a pot (ex. tomato, peppers, bush cucumbers, and more).
3.
Scavenger Hunt -During a summer get-to-together, put kids (and adults) into groups of 2-4. Create a list of things that can be collected from nature. (ex. green leaf, brown leaf, round pebble, pink flower petal, stick with a fork on the end, a tall weed, etc)
4.
Fort Wayne Walking Tours. You can take a tour of Fort Wayne the 1st Friday of every month. The walking tour is about 1 Y2 hours long and starts at 1 pm in the Convention & Visitor Center located across from the Hilton Hotel at 1021 South Calhoun Street.
5.
Have a water fight with your friends and family. Create teams and have a combination of water balloons, water guns, and small buckets. Be creative with backyard activities. Believe it or not, adults sometimes have more fun than kids during these types of games.
Make Salad a Healthy Part of Your Summer
Salads are a great way to help you fill your quota for the recommended 5 fruits and vegetables a day. However, like everything else in this world, there is a healthy way to make salads and an unhealthy way. If you are watching your waste line or wanting to maintain it, you should follow a few rules for salad making.
1.
Watch what you put on your salad: It isn't the lettuce or vegetables that make a salad high in fat it is what you put on top of your salad. Meat, cheese, eggs, croutons, bacon bits, and salad dressing, are just a few things you can put on your salad that add fat and calories. Meat, cheese, and eggs will provide protein but just remember that they are high in saturated fat and cholesterol, so use them in moderation.
2.
Watch for "Red Flags": There are a few words that mean high fat and calories: Chef, Caesar, Cobb, & Taco Salad, plus Ranch, Bleu Cheese, and Thousand Island dressings. Try low-fat and fat-free dressings or low oil-to-vinegar ratio vinaigrettes.
3.
Use different lettuce leaves: The greener the leaves the more vitamins and minerals. Sorry folks, Iceburg lettuce is mostly water.
4.
Add protein to your salad: Beans are low in fat, plus they add protein and fiber to your diet. Grilled chicken, turkey, low-fat lunch meat, and Canadian bacon are other low-fat proteins you can add to your salad. Remove the yolks from eggs to remove the fat but keep the egg whites which are high in valuable protein.
5.
Use whole wheat pastas: If you are making pasta or rice salad, use the whole wheat form to add fiber. Plus, add plenty of vegetables and dried fruits for added fiber.
